Things to know:
Depending on your arrival time, we will take a stroll through the historic part of the city.
In the evening, enjoy your first dinner at a local taverna, the perfect opportunity to meet your fellow travellers.
Transfer from Thessaloniki to Zagori with a lunch stop in Metsovo, a town of Vlach heritage.
Metsovo is one of Greece’s most picturesque and traditional towns. Built at an altitude of 1,156 meters, it is located on one of the highest peaks of the Pindus mountain range, on the borders of Epirus, Thessaly, and Western Macedonia.
Afterwards, we continue to Zagori and settle into your guesthouse in the village of Kipi. Briefing and overview of the program, followed by a short easy walk around the famous stone arch bridges (depending
on arrival time).
Distance: 3 hours, 6-7 km.
Elevation gain/loss: ±320 m
Overnight: KIPI
We hike from Kipi to Koukouli and Vitsa, following ancient paved paths once used by merchants to link these traditional villages. After climbing the steps of Vitsa, we head towards the famous village of
Monodendri, where we spend the night.
Distance: 8.5 km
Duration: 5-6 hours
Elevation gain: 690 m
Elevation loss: 400 m
Overnight: MONODENDRI
Today, we cross the Vikos Gorge, one of the most impressive canyons and the deepest in the world! The hike begins with a steep descent to the small stream that runs through the gorge. We follow the path beside the stream, walking in the heart of the National Park. Many wild animals, such as birds of prey, bears, and wild boar, find refuge in the canyon. The hike ends in the village of Papigo, after climbing the northwest face of the Vikos Gorge, under the shadow of the Papigo towers.
Distance: 16 km
Duration: 8-9 hours
Elevation gain: 1300 m
Elevation loss: 1250 m
Overnight: PAPIGO
From Papigo, we hike to the highlands of Mount Timfi, reaching an alpine lake at 2,050 meters altitude. The path climbs 900 meters through stunning, tranquil landscapes, leading us to the Astraka mountain refuge.
There are several water sources along the way, so you don’t need to carry much water. After a short stop at the refuge, we continue for another 1.5 hours to the alpine lake “Drakolimni” at 2,050 meters. The views are incredible, with panoramic vistas of the Pindus mountain range. We then return to the refuge for the night.
Distance: 10 km
Duration: 5-6 hours
Elevation gain: 1250 m
Elevation loss: 300 m
Overnight: ASTRAKA REFUGE
Today is the longest hike, as we cross the Timfi mountain range from north to south. Starting from the refuge, we head into the vast mountain plains. Beneath the impressive cliffs of the Astraka summit, we pass a small water reservoir, “Loutsa Robozi,” where shepherds water their animals in summer. Later, we pass through the “Mega Lakos” canyon, which leads us to Vikos. After crossing a water spring, we continue towards the area around the village of Tsepelovo, our final destination.
Distance: 12.5 km
Duration: 8-9 hours
Elevation gain: 585 m
Elevation loss: 1280 m
Overnight: TSEPELOVO
This day takes us along ancient paved paths (kalderimia) to the plains of Vradeto, the highest village in Zagori at 1,450 meters. After a visit to “Beloi,” a famous viewpoint over the Vikos Gorge (optional, adds 5km), we descend via the famous Vradeto steps, leading us to Kapesovo for the night.
Distance: 11 km
Duration: 7-8 hours
Elevation gain: 950 m
Elevation loss: 900 m
Overnight: KAPESOVO
The last hike descends from Kapesovo through Kipi to Elati, mainly through forests that are famous for their wildlife, including bears and deer! This marks the end of your program, and you’ll spend the night in a local guesthouse, followed by a final dinner to celebrate the trek through Zagori!
Distance: 12.5 km
Duration: 5-6 hours
Elevation gain: 750 m
Elevation loss: 860 m
Overnight: ELATI
This morning, we depart for Thessaloniki or onward to your next destination (3.5-hour drive, with a break).
